ABOUT
In September 2012, on my way back from a pub to my nearby hotel, I took a shortcut through the burial ground of St. Bartholomew’s Church in Horley, Surrey. It was around midnight, and a full moon lit up the gravestones and monuments. They looked like hundreds of silent ghosts. The whole scene was surreal – spooky, otherworldly. A little creepy, a little thrilling. My heart was racing.
I didn’t have my camera with me that night, but I knew instantly – I had to come back. I promised myself I would.
Four years later, in November 2016, I had a layover at London Gatwick and booked the same hotel, with one clear intention: to finally capture what I saw that night. But it was raining. It seemed the opportunity might slip away again. Then, just before the time I had planned to shoot, the rain stopped.
Everything was wet and reflective, as if the scene had been freshly polished just for me. I had enough time to observe the yard, choose my composition, and set up carefully. With my camera in Bulb mode and a torch in hand, I painted light slowly across the gravestones – revealing textures, shapes, and shadows one by one.
That moment felt like a quiet collaboration between memory, place, and time.
